Il Sentiero del Trifolao is a scenic trail that traces the paths once favored by truffle hunters in the Langhe region. The trail starts from the top of the village and descends towards hazelnut groves and wooded areas, rich in truffle-bearing plants. These plants have roots that support the mycorrhization of truffles, an underground fungus prized for its unique flavor.
The areas are often frequented by local truffle hunters, or trifolao, especially at night. Armed with their dogs and small hoes, they search for truffles, which in the sandy soils of the Rocche are some of the most aromatic and valued. The truffles from this area tend to have a rounded shape, making them easier to clean, which is why chefs appreciate them.
A small detour on the trail leads visitors to the Tartufaia Sperimentale di Valtesio, an experimental truffle field where various truffle-producing plants have been planted and cultivated in a small municipal forest.
The route then climbs back towards the village, passing through historic vineyards. Vezza d’Alba has a long-standing tradition of viticulture, with records of wine production dating back to 1473.
The Sentiero del Trifolao begins in the historic center of Vezza d’Alba. The route’s map and general information panel can be found next to the Town Hall in Piazza San Martino, where visitors can also explore the Museo Naturalistico del Roero (Roero Natural History Museum).
